One room in my house never gets cold. Is that the ductwork?
It is the first thing to check. A system short of capacity leaves the whole house uncomfortable; a single room that lags behind its neighbours points at the branch feeding it, and that branch is a repair rather than a replacement in most of the houses we are called to.
Can the duct be repaired, or does it all have to be replaced?
In most of the houses we are called to, a repair is what is needed: a reconnection, new support, a joint remade, a boot re-anchored. Replacement is a different conversation and it belongs to whole systems that are undersized, contaminated beyond cleaning, or so brittle that every joint fails as soon as the next one is fixed. We will tell you which of the two you are looking at once the run is open, and we will tell you when the honest answer is the cheaper one.

By following the branch rather than by guessing, and most faults turn out to be at a junction rather than in the middle of a tube: a collar, a boot, a takeoff, or a strap that has let a run drop. Is duct sealing the same thing as duct repair?
Sealing is one of the things a repair can involve, not a separate service. Where a joint has opened because its tape or mastic failed, closing that joint properly is the repair. But a run that has come apart needs reconnecting and fastening before anything is sealed, and a sagging run needs re-hanging first — sealing a duct that is not supported just puts a neat finish on a problem that will come back.
Why does tape keep failing in my attic?
Because a Florida attic is a hard place to be adhesive. Summer temperatures up there run far above what the living space ever sees, humidity cycles through every day, and the duct itself flexes a little every time the blower starts and stops. Tape that was adequate on the day it went on gives up years before the duct does. That is why an opened joint gets the connection remade and fastened rather than simply taped over a second time.
Do I need the ducts cleaned as well as repaired?
Not automatically, and we will not sell you both because you called about one. They answer different complaints: repair is for air that is not arriving, cleaning is for what the air is carrying. Where a run has been open to an attic for a while the two do tend to travel together, because unfiltered attic air has been going into the system the whole time. If that is what the technician finds, you will be told so and shown why — and if it is not, you will be told that too.

There is no honest number to print here, because a repair is priced by what is wrong rather than by the square footage of the house. Re-anchoring one boot and re-hanging a run of flex are not the same job as remaking a plenum takeoff.
